I Tried to “Have It All” as a Mom: A Realistic Mom Routine That Actually Works

If you’ve been searching for a realistic mom routine that actually works, one that doesn’t involve waking up at 5 a.m. or pretending burnout is just part of the job, you’re not alone.

As a stay-at-home mom, I tried all the advice that promised balance, productivity, and glowing energy. Some of it helped. A lot of it just made me feel like I was failing at something everyone else seemed to be pulling off effortlessly.

This realistic mom routine is what finally helped me feel more energized, more confident, and more like myself, without chasing perfection or turning my life upside down.

The Stuff That Sounds Good on Instagram (But Doesn’t Belong in a Realistic Mom Routine)

Let’s be honest, most viral routines are designed to look good online, but rarely work in real life.

Waking up at 5 a.m.
Unless your kids magically sleep in too, this rarely fixes anything. My kids have some weird superpower sense that whenever I wake up earlier than normal due to needing to be ready earlier or get something done, they somehow know and are awake like two seconds later, knocking on the bathroom door while I’m putting my contacts in. 

Perfect schedules
If your routine falls apart the moment someone needs a snack, it’s not a realistic mom routine; it’s a fantasy. My kids are constantly asking for things… Snacks, help getting a craft set up, a new game out of the cabinet, etc.

Doing things just because you “should.”
If it drains you, stresses you out, and doesn’t move your life forward or make it better, it doesn’t belong in your routine. Period.


What Actually Helped Me Build a Realistic Mom Routine

This is the part that actually changed my day-to-day life.

1. Walking Instead of Forcing Workouts When I’m Burnt Out

I stopped trying to fit into workout routines when I was feeling too tired and focused on movement I could stick with. Walking, on the treadmill or outside, became the foundation of my realistic mom routine because it was simple, flexible, and didn’t require a full mental pep talk. Yes, I always aim for several days per week of some weight-based exercise as I’ve mentioned before, but walking is a solid addition or backup plan. It’s sustainable, it clears my head, and it doesn’t require a whole mental pep talk first. Five miles on a treadmill while watching trash TV after the kids are in bed? Sustainable. Magical, honestly.

2. Dressing for My Present Lifestyle (and Still Feeling “Young & In Style”)

Instead of dressing for a “future version” of myself, or trying to recreate my early-20s wardrobe, I started dressing for my present lifestyle.

That meant finding pieces that:

  • work for school drop-offs, errands, and real life
  • feel current and stylish without trying too hard
  • let me pull from brands that might not feel traditionally “age appropriate,” but I still love the fit, so styled in a way that feels confident, not like I’m trying too hard to be someone I’m not.

I realized I didn’t want to dress older, and I didn’t want to dress younger, I wanted to dress relevant to how I feel. Mixing trend-forward pieces with elevated basics helped me feel modern, energized, and put-together without feeling like I was trying to keep up with Gen Z or disappear into “mom clothes.”

Once I started dressing for the life I actually live, while still choosing pieces that make me feel fresh and stylish, getting dressed became easier. That confidence became a real part of my realistic mom routine.

Lately, I’ve been leaning into a more realistic mom routine that includes dressing for my actual lifestyle instead of an imaginary one.


3. Supplements I Actually Take (and Why They Fit a Realistic Mom Routine)

Instead of juggling a dozen bottles and a complicated schedule, I focused on a few supplements that support energy, mood, and overall balance—without turning into another thing to manage.

I use liposomal vitamin C because it’s designed for better absorption and tends to be easier on the stomach. Vitamin C plays a key role in collagen production, which supports skin elasticity and overall skin health as we age. That shift changed how I approached my routine, my content, and even how I think about balance. This realistic mom routine works because it supports real life, not an idealized version of it.
